Most freelancers never figure this out (but you will)
This is something that took me a long time to learn…
I’ve been a freelancer for the past 10 years.
At first, I was like most freelancers I see today.
I went to platforms like Upwork and Fiverr, competing with hundreds of other freelancers, taking whatever gig came my way.
I believed that the key to success was to be have as many skills as possible.
So, I studied different niches.
Whiteboard animation.
FB ads.
Video editing.
I took courses, attended workshops, and consumed every piece of information I could find just to be “in demand.”
I polished my portfolio, resume, and CV, tweaking them over and over, hoping they’d finally make me stand out.
But despite all that effort, something felt… off.
I wasn’t hitting my income goals.
I wasn’t closing clients the way I used to.
I started to wonder: Is freelancing even sustainable long term?
Then, in October 2024, I joined one of the best freelancing communities in the Philippines… and that’s when everything changed.
For the first time, I was surrounded by freelancers who weren’t just “grinding” endlessly.
They had systems.
They had clarity.
They weren’t wasting energy chasing clients.
And I realized something huge:
❌ You don’t need a ton of skills.
❌ You don’t need a portfolio or resume.
❌ And you definitely don’t need to chase clients nonstop.
What you do need is a simple, strategic approach.
The Turning Point
I started noticing patterns among the most successful freelancers.
They weren’t “generalists” who could do everything. They were specialists solving very specific problems for very specific clients.
So, I shifted my approach.
Instead of trying to be “good at everything,” I did this:
1️⃣ Chose a market. (Example: Lawyers, e-commerce brands, coaches)
2️⃣ Identified their top 3 problems. (Increase revenue, get leads, automate tasks)
3️⃣ Learned ONE skill that directly solved one of those problems. (Email Copywriting)
4️⃣ Optimized my profile and crafted a clear offer statement.
(Example: “I help coaches increase their revenue through email copywriting.”)
5️⃣ Took action and stayed consistent.
And that’s when everything changed.
The Shift From Struggle to Clarity
Instead of applying to dozens of job postings every day, I started attracting clients.
Instead of struggling to prove my worth, I became the obvious choice.
Instead of pricing myself low to stay competitive, I was able to charge more because my value was clear.
Looking back, the biggest mistake I made was thinking more skills = more money.
That’s what keeps freelancers stuck in the never-ending cycle of learning without earning.
The truth is…
Clarity beats complexity.
If you know exactly who you serve, what problem you solve, and how to position yourself, freelancing stops being a hustle and starts becoming a business.
And once you see that shift, everything changes.
